Here are some other ways to adjust the characteristics of a particular epoxy resin
Coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE)
Most materials experience thermal expansion as a result of temperature changes that increase the energy of molecular interactions. CTE is a measure of how much the temperature changes for every degree increase.
CTE mismatches can occur between two substrates or between the adhesive and the substrate. Therefore, a common approach is to select adhesives with the lowest CTE possible. Another option is to insert special negative CTE fillers or ceramics into the unfilled adhesive. However, doing so results in a significant increase in tensile modulus, which makes the epoxy harder.
Glass transition (Tg) temperature
The glass transition (Tg) temperature of an epoxy resin is a range within which it will change from a hard, glassy consistency to a softer, more elastic consistency. It can span about 50-250 degrees Celsius. However, the choice of epoxy resin, the filler used, and curing time all affect Tg.
Epoxy resins with Tg exceeding 150 degrees Celsius usually have excellent high temperature resistance. However, the types of Tg in the range of 120-130 degrees Celsius provide excellent chemical resistance.
Correct adhesion to various substrates
Epoxy adhesives bind and seal a variety of substrates, from metal and most plastics to wood and concrete. However, there are also some unsuitable materials, such as low surface energy plastics, including polyolefins, silicone and fluorocarbons.
